it's that time of year again when we can go out into the country (only 5 minutes from our house) and pick fresh strawberries! i heard about a special one of the strawberry patches was having earlier this week and went after work to get some. and i came home with LOTS...a huge container for our house and a smaller container for my in-laws, all for just $10. and they taste much better than store bought berries. definitely a perk to living in a more rural area...growing up in a suburban/metropolitan area, i had never been strawberry picking until i moved here. we'd still like to get to a less rural/small town area at some point before too long, but in the meantime, i'll enjoy little things like this :)
i had been reading a better homes & gardens the other night after picking strawberries and came across a strawberry scone recipe which i tried that night. i didn't have freeze-dried strawberries, so i just upped the fresh strawberries a bit. it turned out pretty well. the scones weren't pretty (i couldn't even bring myself to take a picture of them to post :)), but they taste great and are a good breakfast instead of my usual cup of dry cereal i grab as i'm going out the door! they'd probably be good with a little light icing drizzled on them too.
bhg also had this yummy sounding carrot bread recipe in the magazine, so maybe i'll try that this weekend!
